Business Excellence Awards postponed to 2010This
article as The RVA Board of management have postponed the Business Excellence Awards to Friday 26 March 2010. An email to all RVA members was distributed last month explaining that the RVA Board of Directors took the decision to postpone the awards due to feedback from members who requested more time to prepare and short-term budgetary constraints from principal sponsors. The awards will be held at the famous Atrium at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne on Friday 26 March 2010. The message to members indicated that expressions of interest, in the RVA Business Excellence Awards, had climbed to more than 65 in recent weeks. RVA President Simon Owen said there was strong interest in the awards and this type of event had obvious benefits for the retirement village industry. “The awards provide a number of benefits to members and the industry at large. They will be a way to benchmark good business and management practices and promote excellence throughout our sector. “We acknowledge that some members have spent considerable time and resources preparing their submissions and we sincerely hope this hasn’t caused any serious inconvenience. The submissions which were prepared will be welcomed later this year,” Mr Owen said. Submissions for awards will continue to be accepted with a new deadline extending to November 2009.

article as It’s no secret Australia’s population is ageing at a rate never before experienced in human history. This huge shift in age-based demographics means that new housing options will have to be made available but with that comes a whole array of job opportunities to service the needs of this ever growing sector. Retirement Villages offer residents, aged 55 and over, lifestyle choices that entail security, community and activities in which they can choose their own level of participation. Programmed Property Services’ National Business Development Manager, Simon Branson said a retirement village required a wide range of services and trades. “Like any complex community there are all kinds of jobs and services needed to ensure the smooth operation of a retirement village. “We have been working with the retirement industry for many years to support villages in their continuing growth by providing flexible and cost effective outsourced solutions for the benefit of the residents and staff”, Mr Branson said. Maintenance and ground services can range from individual trade services such as painting, grounds management and corporate imaging to a complete facility management solution. Retirement Villages require service providers to develop solutions that meet with the existing and continuing needs of a village, its residents and staff. This can also include hair dressers, health care and gym and fitness trainers as many villages have their own pool and gym facilities. Other services have included language, craft and woodwork instructors who can often learn a thing or two from the residents they teach. “The enormous growth of the industry over the past 10 years or more has resulted in the creation of many jobs that never existed and in turn, many training and development opportunities for people to work within the industry. “We have experienced this first hand. As the expectations of the residents increase so does the need to further train and up skill staff to deliver,” Mr Branson said. Because retirement villages promote an active and independent lifestyle there is really no limit to the diversity of service providers needed to assist residents achieve the results they desire.
